Wiper Seals

Wiper seals / Scraper Seals

Wiper seals are also known as Scraper seals. They tend to be used in conjunction with other sealing elements. Wiper seals create a tight fit whilst still allowing a reciprocating ram rod to pass through the inner bore of the seal.

Despite it’s important function, the wiper seal is possibly the most undervalued seal type in the hydraulic cylinder. Wiper seals are used to eliminate contaminants such as moisture, dirt, and dust. Contamination can cause significant damage to the rod, cylinder wall, seals, and other components. This is one of the primary causes of premature seal and component failure in a fluid power system.

Some Wipers or Scrapers have a secondary lip used to capture any oil that may have bypassed the main seal. The secondary lip may also remove any bonded contaminate from the rod surface. These types of wipers are often called ‘double-edged wipers’.

The common compound for wipers is polyurethane. Metallic scrapers may be used for sub zero temperature applications, and particularly arduous applications where foreign materials can deposit on the rod.

Common types of Piston Seals

WRB wiper seal
WRB wiper seal profile

WRB (Medium duty)
The WRB wiper has a lip designed to stop dirt, mud, dust, moisture, etc accumulating on the rod. The wiper is manufactured from a high hardness NBR compound suitable for installing in a grooved housing. To prevent dirt passing the outside of the wiper, and to reduce the pumping action, the outside diameter has an interference fit with the housing. Polyurethane’s excellent wear resistance increases the seal’s life expectancy to 3 times that of NBR. Also available in FKM (Viton).

MAX. OPERATING CONDITIONS:
Temp. range: -40°C to +100°C (up to +200°C on request)
Speed (max): 2 m/s

MAX. SURFACE ROUGHNESS:
Static: 0.8 µmRa Dynamic: 0.4 µmRa

APPLICATION:
Hydraulic and Pneumatic cylinders. Medium duty. For heavy duty applications, select polyurethane as the material.

COMPATIBILITY:
Mineral oils, Bio oils, Water soluble & Water glycol fluids.

WRC (Medium duty)
WRC Wiper has a lip designed to stop dirt, mud, dust, moisture etc from accumulating on the rod. The wiper is manufactured from a high hardness NBR compound suitable for installing in a simple groove design. The lip of this wiper does not project beyond the cylinder cover so that it is protected from damage. Due to polyurethane’s excellent wear resistance, the life expectancy is 3 times that of NBR. Also available in FKM (Viton) on request.

MAX. OPERATING CONDITIONS:
Temp. range: -40°C to +100°C (up to +200°C on request)
Speed (max): 2 m/s

MAX. SURFACE ROUGHNESS:
Static: 0.8µmRa Dynamic: 0.4 µmRa

APPLICATION:
Medium duty. Hydraulic cylindrical.

COMPATIBILITY:
Mineral oils, Bio oils, Water soluble & Water glycol fluids.

WCA (Heavy duty)
Designed to be press fitted in the housing. A corrosion resistant metal ring houses NBR element. The proportion of the wiping lip allows it to follow the side movement on the rod and to clear heavily deposited dirt. Due to polyurethane’s excellent wear resistance properties, the life expectancy is 3 times that of NBR.

MAX. OPERATING CONDITIONS:
Temp. range: -40°C to +100°C (up to +200°C on request)
Speed (max): 0.5 m/s

MAX. SURFACE ROUGHNESS:
Static : 0.8 µmRa Dynamic : 0.4 µmRa

APPLICATION:
Heavy duty. Earth moving.

COMPATIBILITY:
Mineral oils, Bio oils, Water soluble & Water glycol fluids.

WDA wiper seal

WDA wiper seal profile

WDA (Heavy duty)
A double function seal. The double lip wiper prevents dust, dirt and moisture from entering the cylinder. The special design helps prevent scoring, protects the guiding parts and extends the service life of the seal. In addition, the sealing lip is facing the media, reducing the residual oil film. WDA wiper seal offers a simple groove design supplied as a continuous ring for easy installation into the groove. Also available in polyurethane. Polyurethane’s excellent wear resistance increases the seal’s life expectancy to 3 times that of NBR.

MAX. OPERATING CONDITIONS:
Temp. range: -40°C to +100°C (up to +200°C on request)
Speed (max): 2 m/s

MAX SURFACE ROUGHNESS:
Static: 0.8 µmRa Dynamic: 0.4 µmRa

APPLICATION:
Hydraulic and Pneumatic cylinders. Medium duty

COMPATIBILITY:
Mineral duty. For heavy duty applications, use polyurethane.
